Disability Insurance

Income Protection When You Need It Most

An unexpected illness, injury, or pregnancy can affect your ability to work and earn an income. That's why The Bishop's School provides disability benefits designed to help protect your financial well-being during periods when you're unable to work due to a qualifying medical condition.

Our disability program includes both Short-Term Disability (STD) and Long-Term Disability (LTD) coverage, helping provide support throughout your recovery.

Short-Term Disability (STD)

Support During Temporary Absences

The Bishop's School provides Short-Term Disability benefits through the California State Disability Insurance (SDI) Program, administered by the Employment Development Department (EDD).

STD benefits may be available if you are unable to work due to:

  • A non-work-related illness
  • A non-work-related injury
  • Pregnancy and childbirth
  • Other qualifying medical conditions
  • Benefit Highlights
  • Partial wage replacement while you are unable to work
  • Benefits of up to 55% of eligible earnings
  • Benefits begin after a 7-day waiting period
  • Coverage may continue for up to 52 weeks, provided you continue to meet the state's definition of disability

How to Apply

To receive Short-Term Disability benefits, you must:

  • File a claim with the California Employment Development Department (EDD).
  • Have your healthcare provider certify your disability.
  • Meet all eligibility requirements established by the State of California.

Additional resources are available for:

  • California State Disability Insurance (SDI)
  • Paid Family Leave (PFL)
  • California Family Rights Act (CFRA)
  • Certification of Health Care Provider forms
  • Long-Term Disability (LTD)
  • Financial Security for Extended Recoveries

For disabilities that extend beyond a short-term absence, The Bishop's School provides employer-sponsored Long-Term Disability coverage through Unum.

Long Term Disability (LTD)

LTD coverage helps replace a portion of your income if a serious illness or injury prevents you from returning to work for an extended period.

Benefit Highlights

  • Coverage available to all eligible full-time active employees
  • Monthly benefit equal to 66.67% of pre-disability earnings
  • Maximum monthly benefit of $10,000
  • Benefits begin after a 90-day elimination period
  • Benefits may continue through your normal Social Security retirement age, provided you continue to satisfy the plan's definition of disability

If a disability begins at age 65 or older, benefits are payable according to Unum's age-based benefit schedule.
